To minimize the damage from this, micro-segmentation, which involves breaking down production management information and other normally communicated lines into smaller segments at the production line or PLC unit level, is effective. If the line issues production management information, there is no need for external connections. However, Ethernet used in IT is a bidirectional standard for exchanging control signals, so the circuits are connected bidirectionally. This is where OWCD comes into play. It physically restricts the line to one direction and completely shuts out reverse flow. It is used in conjunction with devices that convert/decode OPC UA protocol for communication through OWCD. If ransomware measures are not properly implemented between production equipment and OT=IT, it can now expand to the entire factory and supply chain.
