Basic Knowledge of Sheet Metal Processing - Tapping Processing
Basic Knowledge of Sheet Metal Processing
We will introduce the basic knowledge of sheet metal processing.
"Tap processing" is a method of creating screw holes. A pilot hole is drilled using a punching process, and then a male thread is formed in that pilot hole. There are two types of tap processing methods: cutting type and rolling type. In the cutting type, a pilot hole with the same diameter as the crest of the male thread (the narrowest part) is cut to create the valley of the male thread (the widest part). In the rolling type, the metal of the pilot hole is pushed to form the valley of the male thread, and the pushed metal is gathered between the valleys to create the crest. The cutting type produces chips, so it is not recommended for applications like computer cases where a circuit board needs to be installed. However, the torque required to turn the tap during processing is relatively low, and the precision of the pilot hole is not as critical. The rolling type does not produce chips, so it is free from problems caused by chips. However, the required torque is greater than that of the cutting type, and the precision of the pilot hole is also necessary.
