CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation) inspection solution that can measure the thinning of the target object without removing insulation materials, fireproof coverings, or coatings: SONOPEC.
SONOPEC is a non-intrusive electromagnetic technology based on the latest PEC (Pulsed Eddy Current Testing) that enables the detection, measurement, and monitoring of corrosion in low carbon steel piping and pressure vessels without removing insulation materials, paint, coatings, concrete fireproofing, or marine products such as oysters. This is a CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation) inspection solution. • Inspections can be conducted while the equipment is in operation, resulting in no production loss. • There is no need to remove insulation materials covering the objects, leading to reduced inspection costs. • Quick inspections are possible as surface treatment is not required. • PEC provides extremely high reproducibility in measurements taken at the same location. • Inspection costs underwater are significantly reduced. • When the material of the object is uniform, the accuracy of corrosion detection under insulation is ±5%. • The accuracy of corrosion monitoring is ±0.2%. • The temperature range for inspections is from -100°C to 550°C. • The thickness of the inspection target objects ranges from 2 mm to 70 mm. • The maximum thickness of insulation materials is 200 mm. • For piping, the minimum outer diameter is from 50 mm.

Applications/Examples of results
This is a screening inspection technology using pulse eddy current testing that can inspect the thinning trend of objects such as pipes, elbows, pressure vessels, tank side plates coated with thermal insulation materials like calcium silicate and fireproof coatings, and steel sheet piles with oyster shells attached, as well as steel pipe piles constructed with FRP, without removing the outer coating. Since inspections can be conducted without stripping the coating, it leads to cost reduction and is used in various objects in domestic plants.
