Acquired rust occurs when metals like iron come into contact with stainless steel, and the iron particles that adhere to the surface begin to rust. Over time, the rust from the iron transfers to the stainless steel and starts to corrode it. Once rust adheres to the passive film, its protective function is compromised, making it impossible to prevent.
