[Seminar] Key Points and Remaining Issues of the "Next Generation Medical Infrastructure Act" Amendment

We will hold a seminar titled "Cabinet Office: Key Points and Remaining Issues of the 'Next Generation Medical Infrastructure Act' Amendment." The Next Generation Medical Infrastructure Act is a special law under the Personal Information Protection Act that promotes the utilization of medical data while protecting personal information. However, there have been criticisms regarding the previous framework, as the "anonymized medical information" that is utilized is difficult to use for research due to the removal of rare disease names, and its application for drug approval has also been challenging. The amended bill was enacted in the regular session of the National Diet in 2023 and has been in effect since April of this year. The main contents of the amendment include the establishment of a system that allows the use of "pseudonymized medical information" and the possibility of linking data from this law with data from sources like the NDB. In the lecture, in addition to an explanation of the amended law, we will provide detailed information on the government's efforts to promote the secondary use of medical data, as far as possible.
