Acquired rust refers to the phenomenon where metal in contact with stainless steel rusts, causing the stainless steel itself to rust as well.
"The Causes of Stainless Steel Rusting" Stainless steel has the characteristic of being resistant to rust, but it is not completely rust-proof! There are four main causes of rusting in stainless steel. 1. Contaminated Rust This phenomenon occurs when stainless steel comes into contact with other types of metals, causing the passive film to break down and resulting in rust on the stainless steel. Stainless steel that has been scratched by other metals may gradually rust from the damaged areas. 2. Salt and Acidity The passive film that protects stainless steel from rust is vulnerable to salt and acids. In regions such as coastal areas, where it may come into contact with acidic chemicals, stainless steel can rust. 3. Dirt and Moisture Areas that are contaminated with dirt or water can have their passive film destroyed, leading to rust. 4. Welding and Bending Processes Welded or bent areas may retain residual stress from the processing. If this residual stress remains, it can lead to deterioration of the crystal structure, resulting in rust formation.

basic information
"Methods to Prevent Rust on Stainless Steel" Stainless steel is resistant to rust, but there are surprisingly many causes for rust to occur, and under certain conditions and environments, it can rust easily. One way to protect stainless steel from rust is by painting it. Painting not only protects against salt, acidity, dirt, and moisture, but also helps prevent rust and scratches by covering the surface of the stainless steel with paint. Additionally, an effective method for surface preparation for stainless steel painting is blast treatment, which involves using abrasive materials to grind the surface at high speed. The "shot peening effect" of blast treatment can remove residual stress. At Harada Iron Works, we have handled a large number of stainless steel products used in coastal and marine plant facilities, underwater structures, and ships. Such equipment, which cannot be easily maintained and requires safety, demands corrosion resistance and weather resistance to protect against rust for long periods. We have large blast equipment dedicated to surface preparation and an indoor painting factory, allowing us to perform comprehensive work even on large products.
