Types There are two types of cutting edge corners for ultra-hard end mills: those with a gash land and sharp corners. ■ Differences in Cutting Edges and Their Applications The cutting edge corners of end mills have a reduced cutting angle due to being constrained by four surfaces: the helix angle, the rake angle, the outer relief angle, and the bottom relief angle. In machining processes that involve high cutting depths, high feed rates, and groove processing, where vibrations and impacts are significant, chipping at the corner can easily occur. As a countermeasure, when creating a bottom relief groove (gash), extending the bottom rake face to the outer corner can enhance the strength of the cutting edge. This is known as "gash land (G type)." However, adding a gash land causes the cutting edge corner to retreat from the outer diameter perspective, resulting in corner remnants on the machined surface in a strict sense. If corner remnant removal (pin corner) is necessary, a sharp corner (S type) end mill is used.
