Nutritionally variant streptococci (NVS) are bacteria that require L-cysteine and pyridoxal hydrochloride (vitamin B6) for growth, differing from typical streptococci in their nutritional requirements. NVS belongs to the group of viridans streptococci that are commonly found in the human oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract.
