What is the most important aspect of the painting process, called "keren"? Introduction to the work method and its effects.
The performance of the coating is determined by "keren"!
What is Keren? On a normal surface, there are almost always "foreign substances" such as rust, oxidation films, dirt, and debris attached. Keren is the process of removing these foreign substances and cleaning the surface. Like "substrate adjustment" and "undercoat treatment," it aims to prepare the surface for painting, making it suitable for application. Substrate adjustment is the work done on the base material (the unpainted surface). Undercoat treatment is the work done on the substrate (the painted surface). While there is no strict definition, Keren is generally recognized as "a comprehensive pre-treatment for painting that includes substrate adjustment and undercoat treatment." Harada Iron Works, with 80 years of experience, provides detailed explanations of Keren's methods and effects. Harada Iron Works Co., Ltd. Website: https://harada-tekkou.co.jp/

We also have painting facilities, so we can quickly perform primer painting within the basic time frame of four hours after surface preparation. For 80 years since our founding, we have specialized in heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings that withstand harsh environments such as marine and underwater conditions. The durability of the product is determined by the quality of "surface preparation" and "painting"! - Exposing a clean metal substrate free of any contaminants through blasting - Rapid primer treatment to prevent rust return or re-contamination of the surface - Uniform painting without unevenness while managing the specified film thickness - Thorough inspection of the finish's appearance and film thickness

Applications/Examples of results
Keren is classified into types 1 to 4 based on the method of work and the rate of foreign matter removal. Type 1 Keren polishes the surface using blast processing that collides particles called abrasives at high speed. It achieves the best effect and cleanliness among the four types of Keren. It almost completely removes all foreign matter such as surface rust, paint film, oxide film, and dirt, exposing a clean substrate. The method of blasting and the type of abrasive do not matter, but it is necessary for more than 95-99% of the surface to be free of foreign matter. Type 2 Keren uses electric tools like disc sanders and wire wheels, as well as hand tools, to polish the surface. It has excellent effect and cleanliness, second only to Type 1 Keren. It removes rust, paint film, and dirt from the surface as much as possible. Rust and paint film that are firmly adhered and difficult to completely remove are acceptable. Type 3 Keren uses hand tools such as sandpaper, scrapers, and wire brushes to polish the surface. It provides minimal effect and cleanliness and is generally performed in the early stages of rust formation or on small areas. It removes dirt and low-adhesion rust and paint film from the surface. High-adhesion rust and paint film that are difficult to remove are acceptable.
