We have passed the beginning of spring and entered a "new era." How should we welcome the "new wave" that is about to come? Beyond the bean-throwing of Setsubun and the rituals of the beginning of spring, I have realized many things this year. What is currently passed down as Japan's traditional culture is not unique to Japan. It is something that has been inherited from the continent. Practices like bean-throwing, which represent "protection against evil," and rituals for warding off misfortune have been passed down in Japan since before the Kojiki. Many of these customs have taken root in the daily lives of the Japanese people long before they were recorded in writing. The traditions and cultures that came from the continent have entered the Japanese archipelago and have been transformed into something new by the hands of the Japanese people. This transformation does not completely change what was inherited from the continent into something entirely different; rather, it preserves the traditions that have been passed down while adapting them to resonate with the Japanese spirit, adding new elements, and evolving them into a unique cultural tradition of Japan. *For more detailed content of the column, please refer to the attached PDF document.
