The Schmidt-Boelter heat flux gauge (S/B gauge) is a sensor that corresponds to all modes of heat transfer: radiation, convection, and conduction. It is used in various applications, including aerodynamic wind tunnel experiments. The S/B gauge is made by winding constantan wire in a spiral around an electrically insulating thin sheet, with half of the winding (half a turn) being copper-plated. This process results in the formation of a thermocouple at the locations where the plating on both sides of the thin sheet is completed. The design developed by Vatell and patented in the United States (US6,186,661) insulates the thermocouple on the back side of the thin sheet and directs the surrounding heat towards the housing.
