The comb-shaped electrode generates electrochemical redox cycle reactions on the electrode by interlocking two electrodes (the generator electrode and the collector electrode) in addition to a collection of band electrodes. When such redox cycling occurs, the apparent current value increases, enhancing sensitivity.

The comb-shaped electrode is an electrode developed for trace electrochemical measurements by the NTT Life Environment Technology Research Institute (now NTT Environmental Energy Research Institute). Electrochemical analysis using the comb-shaped electrode has been reported for the detection of trace substances and the observation of reaction behaviors. This comb-shaped electrode is made by creating microelectrode patterns on an insulating substrate using lithography techniques. The electrode structure is shown below. The number of comb teeth is 65. Each electrode functions as an oxidation electrode and a reduction electrode.
