Sputtering involves argon gas filled in a vacuum chamber being ionized by plasma, with the argon ions being accelerated towards a negatively charged target (cathode) by an electric field, resulting in collisions. The strong kinetic energy from these collisions causes atoms from the target material to be ejected by the argon ions and deposited as a thin film on the substrate. Due to this characteristic, sputtering targets require stable, top quality at the crystal structure level.
