[Use Case] Reducing Overall System Power Consumption with RTC Module
By using a low power consumption RTC module, significant reduction in the system's power consumption can be achieved.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is expanding with a wealth of new applications, and there is an increasing need for monitoring and control capabilities. In many cases, as functionalities increase, power consumption also rises. This is where we begin a systematic check of the necessary power demand. Each functional block requires its maximum current during operation. Fortunately, it is not necessary to operate all functions at maximum performance all the time. The goal of power-saving design is to turn off everything unnecessary at any given time. Therefore, devices that are always on need to have very low power consumption. The real-time clock (RTC) must be always on to maintain time, so we suggest leveraging this. The latest RTC modules operate with very low power consumption (typically 50nA to 240nA). In addition to maintaining time information, RTC modules have the capability to periodically wake up the microcontroller. This can lead to a reduction of over 90% in overall system power consumption in many cases.
