Resin Molding and Rheology, 16th Edition: "Kamal's Reaction Kinetics Model"

A detailed explanation of the time changes in reaction speed and reaction rate using graphs! Introduction to the Kamal model and its basic characteristics.

In practice, it is common for a wide variety of materials to be blended into thermosetting resins according to their applications, and many materials with different reaction forms exist. Therefore, there are materials with the characteristic that the reaction rate does not reach its maximum initially under isothermal conditions, and a reaction rate equation that effectively represents this is desired. One of the models that fits this is the Kamal reaction rate equation, which is now frequently used in the world of CAE. [Contents] ■ Kamal model and basic characteristics ■ Time variation of reaction rate and reaction degree - Example of isothermal characteristics - Example of heating characteristics - Other reaction rate models *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. Resin Molding and Rheology, 17th Session: "Viscosity Model of Thermosetting Resins"

I will explain the Castro-Macosko viscosity model, which is often used in CAE!

Thermosetting resins undergo molecular bonding as the reaction progresses, making the molecules less mobile, which results in an exponential increase in viscosity and a transition from liquid to solid at the gel point. When the effects of shear rate and temperature are added, the actual molding process exhibits very complex viscosity changes. In this column, we will explain the Castro-Macosko viscosity model, which is commonly used in CAE. [Contents] ■ Castro-Macosko Viscosity Model ■ Viscosity Increase Equation Due to Curing Reaction ■ Shear Rate Dependency of Viscosity ■ Temperature Dependency of Viscosity ■ Calculation Examples *For detailed content of the column, please refer to the related links. GUI software for OpenFOAM users

A GUI (Graphical User Interface) that anyone can intuitively operate reduces the user burden when generating OpenFOAM input files.

GUI-FOAM is an intuitive GUI software that can be operated easily. Explanations and hints are displayed throughout the screen, and help and tutorials can be easily accessed via a browser. When you input analysis conditions, a list of solvers suitable for your purpose is displayed, and you can specify the version of OpenFOAM for the input files to be generated. 【Features】 - By following the GUI settings, appropriate input files can be created. - Solvers, models, and configuration items can be selected from a list. - Function table settings can be visually confirmed with 2D graphs. - Boundary conditions can be set while checking the mesh boundaries, among others. OpenFOAM is a license-free software with features comparable to commercial CFD software, but the lack of official documentation and GUI is undeniable. Our company has published a practical guide titled "OpenFOAM Library Reference" as an alternative to the official documentation, and we are developing a GUI that reflects the content of the guide to improve the OpenFOAM analysis environment and enhance usability. *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.

CAE: Contact settings of the model

While bond contact is a common setting, it might be interesting to reconsider the contact conditions depending on the circumstances.

When independent models are in contact or very close to each other in CAE, contact conditions are automatically assigned in the CAE settings (in the case of ANSYS). By setting these contact conditions, even if one model moves or is subjected to a load, it will not penetrate the other model. The contact conditions are mainly "bonded contact," but there are also settings such as "no separation" and "rough." *For more details, please refer to the related links or feel free to contact us.*

[Case Study] Optimization of the Entire SUV Vehicle

Successfully reduced weight by approximately 12%! Introduction of a case study on "DEP MeshWorks".

We would like to introduce a case study of the all-in-one CAE platform "DEP MeshWorks" that our company handles, implemented by major automotive manufacturers in North America. The customer was interested in our solution to achieve the challenge of reducing the weight of an SUV while maintaining performance targets by using parameterization of thickness and shape. The main method we proposed was a Design of Experiments (DOE) based multi-domain optimization/design exploration using "DEP MeshWorks" and CAD morphing. The multi-domain optimization/design exploration method based on parameterization using MeshWorks successfully reduced the weight by approximately 12% while meeting all performance targets. [Case Study] ■Challenge - Reduce the weight of the SUV while maintaining performance targets - Provide the optimized CAD model to the design team ■Proposal - DOE-based multi-domain optimization/design exploration using MeshWorks and CAD morphing *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

[Case Study] Weight reduction of 11 kg for the entire SUV vehicle.

Introduction of lightweighting through parameterization and multi-domain optimization/design exploration, along with case studies.

We would like to introduce a case study of the all-in-one CAE platform "DEP MeshWorks" that our company handles, implemented by a major automobile manufacturer. They faced the challenge of reducing the weight of the existing SUV product line (a significant amount achievable during manufacturing) without compromising performance, with minimal packaging and component changes. To address this, we conducted a three-phase approach consisting of baseline evaluation, parameterization using MeshWorks, and optimization. Through the multi-disciplinary optimization/design exploration (MDO) method using MeshWorks, we contributed to a weight reduction of approximately 10 kg for the existing SUV platform. 【Case Study】 ■Challenge - Reduce the weight of the existing SUV product line (a significant amount achievable during manufacturing) - Achieve optimal lightweighting of the vehicle's BIW and chassis ■Proposal - A three-phase approach consisting of baseline evaluation, parameterization using MeshWorks, and optimization *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

It is developed based on the thermal fluid analysis software Simerics MP and utilizes all the functionalities of Simerics MP. 【The following fluid analyses are possible】 ■ Free surface flow ■ Flow considering the compressibility of air contained in liquids ■ Pressure pulsations and water hammer effects ■ Coupling of pump flow with the rigid body motion of valves and cam rings ■ Flow in low to medium vacuum conditions ■ Compressible flow (subsonic) ■ Cavitation ■ Time variation of flow field (velocity vectors, pressure), flow rate, fluid forces, and torque The biggest strength is the ability to automatically create meshes for clearances in the µm range, which is difficult with other general-purpose fluid analysis software!! Recently, there has been an increase in achievements with oil pumps for automobiles and construction machinery, such as vane pumps for power steering and CVTs, and trochoidal pumps for engine lubrication. *There is a lot of information that cannot be published online. Especially, the actual mesh creation and motion should definitely be demonstrated in a demo!
