Gasket Packing Q&A No. 7

Have regulations been established for ceramic fiber-related products?

Daiko Corporation will answer your questions regarding gaskets and packing. 〇 About RCF (Refractory Ceramic Fiber) Regulations In November 2015, the Specific Chemical Substance Hazard Prevention Regulations were amended and enforced, leading to regulations concerning the handling of RCF. The purpose is to strengthen measures to prevent health hazards for workers related to refractory ceramic fibers. The "Ordinance to Partially Amend the Enforcement Order of the Labor Safety and Health Act" (Ordinance No. 294 of 2015) was promulgated on August 12, 2015, and the "Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Ordinance to Partially Amend the Labor Safety and Health Regulations" (Ordinance No. 141 of 2015) was promulgated on September 17, 2015. 〇 Transition to Biodegradable Ceramic Fibers In response to the regulations, we have changed the conventional ceramic fibers to biodegradable ceramic fibers developed to have solubility even when they enter the body. In terms of performance, the only difference is between fibers that dissolve in biological water (RCF-compliant products) and those that do not dissolve (RFC non-compliant products). We guarantee that there are no products that are inferior in performance compared to existing products.

Gasket Packing Q&A No. 9: Gasket Surface Leakage Edition!

What causes leaks when using gaskets? - Surface leak edition -

There are various factors that can cause leaks when using gaskets, but this time I will explain about interface leaks. ◆ What is an interface leak? It is a phenomenon where internal fluid leaks through the interface between the sealing material and the opposing surface (such as a flange or shaft). ◆ Countermeasures Fill the minute gaps between the sealing material and the opposing surface with clamping force. ◆ Requirements for sealing materials - Compatibility - Resilience (to respond to pressure drop due to vibrations, thermal loads, etc. during operation, and to prevent the occurrence of minute gaps)

What is the difference between O-rings and gaskets/packings?

We will also explain the details of each, such as how they are used and their shapes!

O-rings, gaskets, and packing are all types of seals that prevent the leakage of liquids and gases, but they differ in their usage and shape. An O-ring is a ring-shaped seal with a cross-section that is O-shaped, as its name suggests. It utilizes the elasticity of the material to be compressed when fitted into a groove, thereby achieving a sealing effect. When used for motion, it is a type of packing, and when used for fixing, it is a type of gasket. Due to its simple structure, low cost, and high sealing performance in a compact space, it is used in a wide range of fields, including automobiles, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and home appliances. *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links. What is the difference between a gasket and a packing?

We will also introduce the criteria that are clearly defined depending on the place of use!

Gaskets and packing are both sealing materials that prevent the leakage of liquids and gases, but they are clearly distinguished by the "movement" of the places where they are used. In simple terms, gaskets are used in stationary places, while packing is used in moving places. A gasket is a sealing material used in stationary parts. When fixing parts together with bolts or similar fasteners, it is inserted between them to eliminate gaps, preventing internal fluids from leaking and external foreign substances from entering. *For more detailed information, please refer to the related links.
