The number of environmental regulatory substances for soil and groundwater in Japan is small, and among them, the regulation of substances derived from petroleum products is extremely limited. Not only in Asian countries but also in other countries abroad, substances derived from petroleum products are regulated, and TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbons) is naturally included, along with standards set for BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) and PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons). However, in Japan, although guidelines for oil pollution measures have been established, they mainly address issues related to oil odor and oil films, and there are no established standards for TPH or PAHs.
