"Electrical discharge machining" (EDM) originated around 1943 during World War II when the Soviet couple Lazarenko discovered the phenomenon of electrode contact wear due to sparks during their research. This led to the development of the electrical discharge machining method. There are three types of electrical discharge machining: "die sinking," "wire cutting," and "hole drilling." Electrical discharge machining repeatedly causes insulation breakdown in a liquid, shaping the product along the electrode. Normally, the machining debris would float in the liquid and be expelled externally, but when discharge occurs with the suspended sludge, the heat melts the sludge, which adheres to areas other than the intended machining section. This is referred to as "spatter adhesion," and it is a contributing factor to the adhesion. For components used in aerospace parts and similar applications, machining is performed without producing spatter.
