Technical Data: Corrosion Resistance of Electropolished Stainless Steel

One reason is that the corrosion resistance improves after electropolishing.

Electropolishing is widely used as a finishing process for stainless steel not only because of its excellent luster but also because it improves corrosion resistance after electropolishing. By electropolishing, the altered layer and temper scale caused by prior machining are removed, along with contaminants on the surface (such as debris and dirt from processing), resulting in a cleaned surface. Additionally, through electropolishing (anodic dissolution), a thin oxide film is formed on the surface, creating a passive film. This passive film has a higher chromium content than the base material (the stainless steel substrate), resulting in a coating with good corrosion resistance. Furthermore, by eliminating surface roughness, it becomes more difficult for debris and dirt to adhere to the surface after electropolishing, which also contributes to improved corrosion resistance.
