■Development of Molybdenum-Ruthenium Filler Metal This filler metal is used for joining (brazing) high melting point metals due to its high melting point, but it is not commercially available, so it was necessary to procure the materials independently. Using the developed filler metal, we attempted brazing between tungsten pieces. *The left side of the photo shows porous tungsten.* Photo 1: Observed by a CCD camera. This is a failed example where a large gap occurred at the joint. In reality, it was quite difficult to achieve a good result. Photo 2: Successful example! (The joint is in the center of the photo.) There are various methods for joining metals, such as gas welding, arc welding, laser welding, and electron beam welding, all of which involve melting the base material to join them. On the other hand, in the case of brazing, a filler material with a lower melting point than the base material is melted to join the parts, allowing for the joining of complex shapes or precision parts without melting the base material. Additionally, with metallization treatment, it is also possible to join metals and ceramics. The common method for melting the filler material is using a gas burner, but high-frequency induction heating or heating furnaces may also be used, and the optimal method is chosen based on the size, shape, and quantity of the parts to be joined.
