Epoxy resin was discovered in 1938 by Pierre Castan, a Swiss chemist. In 1989, 137,000 tons of epoxy resin were produced in Japan, and epoxy resin is used in a wide range of fields, such as paints, electrical applications, civil engineering, and bonding. This is because epoxy resin has excellent adhesive properties and, after curing, exhibits superior mechanical strength and resistance to chemical properties, as well as electrical insulation. Additionally, epoxy resin can have various different characteristics by combining it with various hardeners to cure together.

Unsaturated polyester resin Characteristics • Excellent mechanical properties, particularly glass fiber reinforced polyester, which has outstanding impact resistance. • High heat resistance. • Superior electrical properties (has performance intermediate between phenolic resins and polystyrene). • Excellent chemical resistance, water resistance, and solvent resistance. • Weak resistance to strong acids and strong alkalis, which can cause degradation. Chemical resistance Chemical-resistant type Manufacturing method • Consists of two processes: the production of unsaturated acid polyester (alkyd) and the mixing with a monomer that acts as a crosslinking agent for this alkyd. • A typical formulation example is to produce alkyd using 1.01 moles of propylene glycol, 0.5 moles of maleic anhydride, and 0.5 moles of phthalic anhydride. • After the reaction is complete, a polymerization inhibitor is added, and the mixture is transferred to a dissolution tank, where a specified amount of styrene is added to produce the final product.
