The Astec fine hole electrical discharge machining (EDM) machine is used in various industries with themes of "burr-free," "small diameter deep holes," "difficult-to-machine materials," and "automation." When you think about making a hole, you generally imagine drilling, right? The fine hole EDM machine can perform special machining and high-precision machining that is difficult with drills. What is burr-free machining? → By melting and evaporating metal using thermal energy, it enables machining that suppresses the occurrence of protrusions (burrs), which is a challenge in cutting processes, resulting in burr-free machining. Why can it handle difficult machining? → By utilizing the thermal energy of powerful electricity, it can machine materials that conduct electricity, including difficult-to-machine materials like hardened steel and carbide. What is the difference from drilling? → Since it is a non-contact process, it can smoothly machine curved surfaces and slopes without the worry of drill breakage, allowing for deep machining of materials up to about 1,500 mm thick. Is electrical discharge machining slow? → By spraying machining fluid from the inside of the pipe electrode, it achieves high-speed hole machining by efficiently discharging machining debris.

Turbine blades used in aircraft are made from Inconel, a heat-resistant alloy that is particularly difficult to machine due to its poor machinability. The turbine blades have cooling holes drilled into them, and machining using fine hole electrical discharge machining, which is not affected by hardness, is commonly employed. The ACNC series is equipped with an NC rotary table that allows for rotational tilt movement and can accommodate an automatic electrode exchange system (AEC) ideal for machining multiple holes, making it capable of processing complex shaped surfaces.

Many cutting tools now feature center holes for supplying cutting oil, as well as oil-through holes that run from the center hole toward the cutting edge. The center holes of increasingly miniaturized tools are becoming narrower and deeper. Fine hole electrical discharge machining excels at non-contact processing of small-diameter deep holes, allowing for the processing of center holes and the reduction of deburring processes at the cross sections of oil-through holes leading to the cutting edge through burr-free machining via discharge. Additionally, options specialized for processing the oil-through holes of miniaturized cutting tools, such as through detection and depth specification machining, are also being developed.

In the medical device industry, there are many difficult processes such as machining challenging materials like SUS and titanium, which have minimal impact on the human body, and deburring processes for cross holes in pipes that are difficult to perform. Additionally, there are many small components, such as parts and needles, which often have small diameters. Fine hole electrical discharge machining can process materials regardless of their hardness as long as they conduct electricity. Furthermore, since it is a non-contact machining method, processing small diameters can be done effortlessly.
