Typically, when we talk about lactic acid, we refer to L-lactic acid, but in recent years, our company has developed "lactic acid bacteria that produce high-purity D-lactic acid." We are also actively developing lactic acid fermentation from cellulose resources, aiming to establish a system that can stably supply optically active lactic acid from various underutilized biomass. We have also developed a process for directly polymerizing lactic acid from fermentation broth and have filed a patent application. We would like to introduce the conversion process of biomass resources using the arming microorganisms we possess. When using arming yeast, the yeast itself can simultaneously carry out saccharification of biomass and ethanol fermentation due to the action of enzymes it produces. Additionally, if the enzyme is amylase, starch can be saccharified and fermented without cooking, and arming yeast can be reused repeatedly. This leads to a significant reduction in enzyme costs, which have traditionally been a bottleneck, and holds great potential for energy-saving and low-cost bioethanol production. We are also actively developing various heat-resistant and acid-resistant industrial yeasts for arming. "Arming microorganisms" that retain various functional proteins on the cell surface enable groundbreaking technology to catalyze higher-order chemical reactions in a single step. Our technology differs from conventional processes in that it eliminates the need to separately prepare and purify the enzymes that act as catalysts, significantly reducing the costs of production processes for useful substances that require multiple steps. Thanks to the technology we developed, various enzymes such as amylase, cellulase, and lipase can now be armed (fixed to the cell surface) with high activity.
