■What is polyurethane rubber? Depending on how it is bonded, it can be classified into polyester (EU) and polyether (AU). The ester type is prone to hydrolysis (due to steam, heat, acid, etc.) but has excellent oil resistance. The ether type is less prone to hydrolysis but has inferior oil resistance. Typically, polyurethane (PU) is a thermosetting resin that hardens when heat is applied, so it requires a different method of mold usage compared to general thermoplastic resins. In this case, a method called casting molding is used, where pre-melted polyurethane (PU) is poured into the mold and heated to cure. Vulcanization adhesion refers to the process of bonding uncured rubber with other materials (such as metals or resins) simultaneously during the rubber vulcanization process within a mold. An adhesive (formulated according to the type of rubber) is uniformly applied to the surface of the material to be bonded with the rubber, and heat and pressure are applied in the mold to achieve adhesion. Additionally, surface treatment of the bonded material or the application of adhesive to the rubber bonding surface may be performed as needed. ■Advantages of Vulcanization Adhesion The primary advantage of vulcanization adhesion is the increased adhesive strength. It bonds more firmly than adhesives that cure at room temperature. Adhesion using room temperature curing adhesives often results in the adhesive layer peeling off when an attempt is made to separate the bonded materials. As the adhesive layer cures, it may not keep up with the rubber's elasticity and can deteriorate over time, leading to failure at the adhesive layer. However, in the case of vulcanization adhesion, it generally does not peel off even when an attempt is made to separate it. If forced, it is the rubber part that tears, not the adhesive part.
