In 2018, we delivered the +CAL25F to Takayanagi Eye Clinic. The clinic is located in Kushiro City, Hokkaido, and is situated very close to the sea and river. In the event of a massive earthquake originating from the Chiba Trench on the Pacific side of Hokkaido, a tsunami of approximately 28 meters is expected to arrive. There is an administrative-designated evacuation site nearby, but since elderly patients visit the clinic, it would be difficult to evacuate quickly in the event of a tsunami during surgery. Therefore, the +CAL25F was introduced as a safety measure. In 2018, we delivered two units of +CAL25F to the Shimoda Marine Laboratory of Nihon University’s Faculty of Bioresource Sciences. The Shimoda Marine Laboratory, located in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture, faces Tanoura Bay and conducts practical training and research on marine resources. However, it is said that in the event of a massive earthquake along the Nankai Trough, a tsunami exceeding 30 meters could reach the area in about 15 minutes. Therefore, the introduction of the shelter was implemented as a measure to ensure the safety of students and faculty and for crisis management. Additionally, the installation location shown in the above photo was constructed by Nihon University in conjunction with the introduction of this shelter, and I was very impressed by their high level of disaster prevention awareness. Furthermore, we conducted simulations of maritime distress situations with students using the +CAL8F, which accommodates eight people, and contributed to disaster prevention research. For a long time, the mainstream of small boats has been composite boats (rigid-hull inflatable boats, hereinafter referred to as RIBs), rubber boats, FRP boats, and aluminum boats, each of which has its own weaknesses. RIBs and rubber boats are prone to punctures upon collision, and the degradation of rubber materials is a concern. FRP boats may develop cracks during collisions, and there are environmental concerns regarding their disposal. Lightweight aluminum boats corrode when they react with seawater and chemicals. Moreover, the materials of the aforementioned boats are heavier than water, so they sink if they lack buoyancy, and repair costs in case of damage are not cheap. However, the new polyethylene boat 'Whaly' is molded entirely from UV-resistant materials, eliminating the need for repairs due to aging, and it does not corrode even when stored in a moored state, allowing for long-term operation. It also has about five times the impact resistance compared to conventional FRP boats.
