Casing the piezo ceramic stack generally protects the main body from mechanical shocks and minimizes the influence of the surrounding environment. In a typical piezo actuator stack, a constant force pushing the stack (known as preload) is required, and this mechanism is incorporated within the casing. This allows for the handling of tension, which is not inherently present in piezo actuators, enabling dynamic operation. The structure is essentially the same laminated structure as the bulk stack. There is a hole in the center. The purpose of this hole is to facilitate optical alignment or electrical and mechanical design. Another advantage is that it allows for a larger diameter compared to a bulk stack with the same cross-sectional area. This increases stability against bending and shear stress, which is beneficial. Especially when a long actuator is required, the capacitance decreases, leading to reduced power consumption, which is advantageous. In dynamic applications where self-heating is expected, the ring structure offers good cooling efficiency and ensures greater flexibility. In terms of performance as an actuator, such as stroke, the ring actuator performs better. When a voltage of a specified polarity is applied, the stack elongates in the axial direction due to the d33 effect. The elongation rate can reach up to 2%.
