There are four main areas of focus: 'Understanding environmental impacts,' 'Risk management and planning,' 'Operating the PDCA cycle,' and 'Creating an environmental manual.' Through these efforts, organizations can enhance their image and create business opportunities by contributing to environmental conservation. This white paper aims to introduce environmental changes, disaster cases, and their countermeasures, and will be published monthly to assist you in preparing for obtaining and renewing your ISO 14001 certification. This time, based on the environmental changes and disaster cases that occurred in 2023, I hope to provide insights that will help you in obtaining and improving your ISO 14001 in 2024.

Labor accidents (work-related injuries) refer to situations where workers are injured, become ill, or die due to work or commuting. Specifically, the following situations are included: 1. Occupational accidents: When workers are injured, become ill, or die due to their work. 2. Commuting accidents: When workers are injured, become ill, or die due to commuting. To reduce labor accidents, there is a medium-term plan established by the government, businesses, and workers that outlines key initiatives. This information is useful for the prevention and countermeasures against labor accidents. Additionally, businesses are required to continue their efforts to ensure a safe workplace environment. This time, we will focus on the most common type of labor accident, falls, and introduce measures to prevent them.

Since 1988, the number of casualties from labor accidents has been decreasing, but since 2000, the situation has remained stagnant. In White Paper Vol. 2 [Winter Season Sees a Surge, Preventing Falls Before They Happen], we addressed the causes and preventive measures for falls, which are the most common type of labor accident. But why do labor accidents occur in the first place? This time, I would like to focus on protecting the safety of workers and discuss the mechanisms behind labor accidents and their prevention.

Environmental issues around the world are diverse. In the previous white paper, we touched on climate change, but there have been recent examples of environmental issues related to Japan, such as the following: - July 2023: Heavy Rain Disaster in Akita Prefecture [Overview] Location: Akita Prefecture Summary: The stationary rainy season front that lingered over the Tohoku region became active, resulting in heavy rainfall primarily in the northern part of Tohoku. Damage: One fatality, four injuries, as well as flooding in homes and basements due to river overflow and landslides. - July 2020: Oil Spill Incident off the Southeastern Coast of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean [Overview] Location: Shallow waters off the southeastern coast of Mauritius Summary: A Japanese cargo ship ran aground in shallow waters off the southeastern coast of Mauritius, causing fuel oil to leak due to hull buckling and other issues. Damage: No human casualties reported. It is estimated that up to 2,000 tons of fuel oil leaked. The SDGs are goals established to address not only these environmental issues but also various problems such as poverty and inequality, with the aim of uniting the world in tackling them. This white paper will primarily focus on the initiatives and key points of the SDGs related to environmental issues.

During Japan's period of rapid economic growth, pollution-related diseases caused by environmental pollution continue to cast a dark shadow over victims, residents of affected areas, and the environment. Among pollution-related diseases, the four major diseases, which include Minamata disease, Second Minamata disease, Yokkaichi asthma, and Itai-itai disease, were particularly severe, with three of them (excluding Yokkaichi asthma) caused by water pollution. **Minamata Disease** This pollution-related disease occurred in Minamata Bay, Kumamoto Prefecture. It resulted in serious health damage due to the consumption of fish contaminated by organic mercury discharged from factories. It is also referred to as the origin of pollution. **Second Minamata Disease** This pollution-related disease occurred in the Agano River basin in Niigata Prefecture. It resulted in serious health damage due to the consumption of fish contaminated by organic mercury discharged from factories. **Itai-itai Disease** This pollution-related disease occurred in the Jinzū River basin in Toyama Prefecture. It resulted in serious health damage due to the consumption of rice grown in water contaminated by cadmium discharged from mines. This time, I would like to address water pollution, which has a significant impact on life and the environment.

Flood damage poses a significant risk to businesses. In recent years, the damage caused by floods and heavy rains has increased, greatly impacting corporate performance and sustainability. For example, the damage from the heavy rains in western Japan in July 2018 and Typhoon No. 19 in October 2019 is still fresh in our memories, making it important to learn from these cases. Every time we see news of corporate facilities such as offices, warehouses, factories, and stores suffering from flooding, many stakeholders may worry, "Is our company going to be okay?" Measures against flood damage have become extremely important for business continuity. To address the question of "How should companies implement flood damage measures?", we will introduce the basics of flood countermeasures in two parts. Now, before the rainy season begins, let’s prepare for typhoons and heavy rains.

While the number of injuries from liquid leakage incidents is not high, the risks they pose to companies are significant. It is difficult to completely prevent accidents, but it is possible to reduce the occurrence of accidents by implementing preventive measures and strategies. A.M. Work that requires protective gear occurs not only in manufacturing but also in various industries. However, there are likely many more near misses that did not result in accidents. This time, we will focus on the more frequent incidents of cuts and chemical injuries, discussing the characteristics of different types of protective gloves and the proper methods for their use.

Among these, "soil contamination measures" are particularly noteworthy. Soil contamination is often caused by corporate activities and not only leads to health hazards and environmental destruction but also carries the risk of significantly undermining a company's credibility. This document will explain the importance of soil contamination measures and appropriate responses, divided into two parts. In Part 1, we will provide basic knowledge about soil contamination and details of the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act.
