【Mitarepo】Cost reduction with automatic 2D unfolding from 3D data! I tried sewing cushions using pattern data created from 3D scans!

"Mitarepo" is a series that introduces what can be done using various products with the concept of "I tried doing this!" In various industries such as aviation, shipping, and automotive, there are many products like seat covers and steering wheel covers that require patterns in the production process. However, translating curved surfaces into flat patterns is a challenging task that takes a lot of time and cost. This is where "pattern development software" comes into play, which can automatically calculate and unfold into a flat surface as long as there is 3D data. In this issue, we created and developed three-dimensional data that cannot be simply unfolded, following the contours of the human body through 3D scanning, and actually sewed it together! Can it be unfolded even with freeform surface shapes? Can the pattern data reproduce the original three-dimensional shape? "Mitarepo" is a series that introduces what can be done using various products with the concept of "I tried doing this!" In Vol. 62, we tested whether we could create a film suitable for a workpiece with curves using "ExactFlat," which can unfold from 3D to 2D. There are various industries, such as automotive and interior design, that require patterns. To unfold from 3D to 2D, I believe you have been relying on the know-how that has been developed over time, but have you ever thought, "Isn't there a way to easily create patterns?" or "I want to unfold free shapes..."? Therefore, we challenged ourselves to directly unfold a workpiece with curves into 2D data and apply decorative film that fits the shape. In Vol. 114, we examined how straight lines drawn on the surface of a 3D model change after being unfolded into 2D, by varying the position of the lines and unfolding them in three different ways. When printing cut patterns, it can be quite difficult to print the patterns together, right? That's where we introduce the flat unfolding software "ExactFlat for Rhino." It can unfold the textures of 3D models, allowing not just the shape but also the surface patterns to be converted into 2D patterns! The created data takes into account pattern alignment, material properties, and stretch characteristics! In the materials, the performance of the texture unfolding function is simply tested by projecting straight lines onto a three-dimensional surface and examining the changes.
