At a quarry factory with water washing equipment, the use of asbestos in the gland packing of slurry pumps was prohibited, and when it was changed to non-asbestos material, leaks occurred within about a week, whereas previously there had been no issues for three months. 【Features】 ○ Proposal from Kamata Industries We considered that there are limitations with non-asbestos gland packing, and changing manufacturers would not significantly extend the lifespan. Therefore, we explored mechanical seals that meet the following conditions: 1. Particularly strong against slurry. 2. Can be installed without any modifications to the pump. 3. Extends lifespan and allows for easy replacement of consumable parts. ○ Resolved Issues and Customer Feedback We determined that conventional flat seal-type mechanical seals could not handle slurry, and resolved the issues with the uniquely structured T-Y seal. We judged that even with an initial cost, a maintenance-free period of 5 months would provide sufficient benefits. After one year since installation, it remains maintenance-free (including bearing replacement and cleaning).
