Technical Report: Prevention of Decomposition of Vitamin C Aqueous Solution by Degassing
This is the result of investigating the decrease in vitamin C content due to the participation and alteration of vitamin C aqueous solution over time using HPLC.
Pharmaceuticals and food ingredients contain substances that can easily oxidize or deteriorate due to oxygen. When analyzing the quantities of these components using various instruments such as HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography), it poses a significant obstacle to recognizing their original values. Furthermore, in the case of pharmaceuticals and food, it is not only the decrease in potency (reduction of active ingredients) that is a concern, but there are also cases where oxidation products and deteriorated substances may have adverse effects.

**Results** - Water in which vitamin C was dissolved was monitored directly for the effects of oxidation due to dissolved oxygen using three types: non-degassed water, degassed water (dissolved oxygen concentration 2.4 ppm), and degassed water (dissolved oxygen concentration 1.2 ppm). - In non-degassed water, vitamin C oxidized in about 2 minutes, and it was found that the greater the degree of degassing, the less the loss due to oxidation. - Even in less extreme cases, it is expected that oxygen in the solution has an oxidizing effect on the components, leading to a decrease in preservation quality. - This is not only a chemical effect but can also be a factor in biological degradation and contamination. - The degassing (removal of dissolved oxygen) by Degasser® is effective for the stable preservation of liquids, including food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, as indicated by these results.
