Second Harvest Japan collects food that is still perfectly edible but is destined to be discarded for various reasons from food manufacturers, farmers, and individuals, and delivers it to children in child welfare facilities, shelters for victims of domestic violence, and people who are forced to live on the streets. Second Harvest Japan is the first food bank in Japan. Second Harvest Japan (2HJ) believes that at least 650,000 people in Japan live in a situation lacking "food security," meaning they cannot access safe and sufficient nutritious food in their daily lives. At the same time, 6,000 tons of food are discarded every day in Tokyo. If we can prevent this food waste and distribute even a small portion of this 6,000 tons of food, hundreds of thousands of people can gain access to food.
