High-precision latches are used for automatic measurement of tool lengths, shape inspection (measurement) with touch probes, and three-dimensional (3D) shape inspection (measurement). Touch probes (which detect contact with a special sensor) are attached to a multi-axis drive mechanism (head) and brought into contact with the workpiece being measured. At that time, the sensor input latches the feedback counter coordinates (stores them in hardware) to measure the positional information. For example, when considering a machine tool for metal processing, it enhances machining accuracy by inspecting the displacement of the metal workpiece when it is positioned and by inspecting the shape of the metal workpiece. When inspecting with a camera, it is often the case that the required precision is not achieved due to light reflections; however, with mechanical sensors and high-precision latches, consistent and high-precision inspection (measurement) is possible as they are not affected by external disturbances such as light.

■Mechanism of High-Precision Latch The timing when a touch probe or similar device contacts the workpiece does not necessarily match the control cycle within the servo amplifier. The servo amplifier corrects the position information by comparing the position data it holds with the timing of the sensor's contact (which does not align with the servo amplifier's control cycle). However, the position information from the servo amplifier is based on data from the time the power is turned on, so it differs from the position information on the higher-level motion controller side. The higher-level motion controller receives the corrected position information from the servo amplifier and converts it into a coordinate system managed by the motion controller, making it user-friendly.
