basic information
The development of flexible electronic devices is becoming more active. In particular, this past year has seen significant progress in the development of flexible displays, with prototypes announced by multiple manufacturers. Furthermore, it is expected that production of flexible OLEDs will finally begin in 2012. A major challenge in making displays flexible has been the need for flexible backplanes. Traditionally, development has relied on the use of metal foils or organic TFTs, but there have been many challenges to practical implementation. Recently, a manufacturing technology for backplanes using the lift-off method has been attracting attention. This technology allows for the production of flexible backplanes based on polyimide, while still utilizing conventional LCD production lines. The development and prototyping of OLEDs and EPDs using this technology are progressing rapidly, and production is expected to start in 2012. As existing electronic devices mature and show signs of declining growth, flexible technology has the potential to create new markets. There is a growing demand in society for advancements in ubiquitous technology and energy efficiency, as well as for environmental durability. Flexible electronic devices represent a technology that meets future needs and will become an essential technology in the development of future electronic products.
