Gamma rays are attenuated when they pass through matter, depending on the density and distance. By measuring the amount of gamma rays that have passed through, the density of the material can be calculated. When a transmission-type gamma density meter is installed on pipes, the gamma rays pass through two materials: the fluid and the pipe. Therefore, it is not possible to calculate only the density of the fluid. To address this, calibration is performed using two types of fluid materials with known densities to offset the effects of the pipe and other materials.
