What is plasma spraying? Plasma is a state of gas at extremely high temperatures where molecules dissociate into individual atoms, and further electrons are emitted. The plasma spraying method uses this super energy as a heat source to melt the coating material, which is then accelerated by a converged plasma jet of explosively expanding gas and coated onto the substrate as if being struck. The heating temperature is 10,000°C. This is why it can coat ceramic materials with very high melting points that cannot be handled by other surface modification methods. Moreover, because the thermal energy retained by the sprayed particles is minimal, the impact on the substrate due to heat can be minimized.
