KUKA has been conducting joint research with EADS to achieve high-precision control of FSW (Friction Stir Welding) using robots, and it is now being put into practical use! FSW is a solid-state joining method developed in 1991, where a rotating tool is inserted into the butt joint of the workpiece, softening the base material with frictional heat, stirring it, and allowing it to flow plastically to create a bond. By combining KUKA's high-performance heavy-duty robot "KR500" with EADS's developed "Delta-N" FSW technology, it becomes possible to join 3D shapes and curved surfaces, making delicate control of FSW easier.
