PCB assembly may seem simple at first glance, but it is actually a process fraught with many pitfalls. For example, a certain IC manufacturer recommends that components have a GND and heat dissipation terminal on the bottom surface, and that through-holes be drilled on the PCB side to assist with heat dissipation. PCB designers faithfully follow the instructions in the datasheet and design lands with drilled through-holes. However, when they power up the shiny new boards that were designed with utmost care and assembled with the latest equipment, some of them do not work. Indeed. As some of you may have noticed, in the relationship between such terminals and lands, the solder paste applied with a metal mask can be sucked into the through-holes drilled for heat dissipation, resulting in an insufficient amount of solder to properly solder the GND and heat dissipation terminal on the bottom of the IC to the land on the PCB.
