SCM440 is a relatively hard type of chrome-molybdenum steel. It has a yield point of 835 or higher and a hardness of approximately 285 to 352. It is produced from killed steel through rolling and forging. The difficulty of processing the steel depends on the presence of ductility when grinding or polishing. In addition to excellent resistance to tempering, it has superior mechanical properties and toughness, making it suitable for automotive parts and bolts and nuts. It is said to maintain strength even at high temperatures around 500°C, and is sometimes used in areas where high temperature and high pressure are prerequisites.

Types of quenching include high-frequency quenching and non-oxidizing quenching. ◎Cost Reduction Using SCM440 If a certain level of hardness is desired but the hardness is insufficient with tempering, using SCM series steels like PX5 or HPM7 (Pre-Guardon steel, HRC30) can eliminate the need for heat treatment. ◎Tempering and Tempered Materials There are tempered materials.
