Hydral 710 is a specially precipitated white trihydrate alumina (ATH). It is a non-toxic, non-corrosive flame retardant used as a smoke suppressant in elastomer applications. It is the most widely used flame retardant in the world. ATH is a highly effective flame retardant due to its thermodynamic properties, which absorb heat and release water vapor. Trihydrate alumina releases 35% of its moisture as water vapor when heated above 205°C. The resulting endothermic reaction cools the product below its flash point, reducing the risk of fire and acting as a vapor barrier that prevents oxygen from reaching the flame. The standard loading amount varies from 20 parts to 150 parts. This is because many polymers, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, are processed at temperatures above 200°C, and these polyolefins must use magnesium hydroxide as a filler for the flame retardant, as the moisture from that hydration is released at around 325°C.
