General silane coupling agents have two types of substituents with different functions. X is a hydrolyzable group, which can be an alkoxy group, an acrylate group, a halogen, or an amine. It hydrolyzes to give a reactive silanol group. R is a non-hydrolyzable organic substituent that has a functional group providing desirable properties to the silane.
