A new high water permeability separator with a monolithic structure that allows for high-speed liquid delivery. Ideal for pretreatment and concentration agents!
The thermoplastic general-purpose polymer (ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer: EVA) has been used for the first time as a novel medium for chromatography. It is a soft material like a sponge, with several tens of microns of through-holes, making it an excellent monolithic separation agent with high permeability. The sponge monolith has a significant capacity for retaining planar molecules, and applications that leverage its unique separation characteristics are anticipated. Additionally, by hydrolyzing the vinyl acetate portion of the EVA sponge monolith, hydroxyl groups can be generated on the surface, allowing for chemical modification and the creation of functional separation agents. Expected applications and uses Applications as media for protein separation in reverse phase and ion exchange modes are anticipated. In particular, sponge monoliths with ion exchange or affinity functions could serve as low-cost, high-permeability alternative separation media for protein purification. Furthermore, the sponge monolith can improve loading capacity and selectivity through hybridization (by adding insoluble functional materials during mixing).

basic information
Advantages as a separator: • Flexible material allowing high-speed fluid flow: Typically has large interconnected pores of 10-50μm. • Low cost: A general-purpose material that is easy to obtain and scalable. • Excellent moldability: Can be processed into various shapes, making column formation easy (sheets, rolls, pellets, etc.). • Hybridization: Allows for the immobilization of functional solids within the resin (particles, fibrous polymers, carbon, etc.). • Surface modification is possible: Introduction of functional ligands and ion exchange groups is feasible. • Large diameter interconnected pores: Applicable for the separation of large molecules (protein purification, cell separation, affinity, etc.). • Good compatibility with biological samples: Minimal irreversible adsorption. • High stereoselectivity: Preferentially retains planar-shaped molecules. • Applications leveraging flexibility: On-site concentration and transport of samples or forced elution through compression are possible. Disadvantages: • Low separation efficiency: Performance equivalent to silica fillers of 60-100μm (more suitable for separating polymer samples than low molecular weight samples). • Usage limitations: Maximum temperature of 70°C; may dissolve in non-aqueous solvents (methanol, acetonitrile, etc., are acceptable). • Small loading capacity: Small surface area and minimal mesopores result in low retention capacity (improvements possible).
