**Case Summary** In 2013, most of Central Europe suffered from a very rainy spring season. In some areas, the highest rainfall since records began in May was recorded. From the end of May to the beginning of June, a complex low-pressure system over the Adriatic Sea and a low-pressure system in the Mediterranean region of North Africa caused exceptionally high levels of intense rainfall, resulting in numerous floods classified as particularly severe events occurring once in a century. According to records from Austria's waterway measurements, the flow rate in Vienna reached approximately 11,000 m³/s, the highest since measurements began in 1830, surpassing the previous record of 10,500 m³/s set in 1899. In Grein, the highest flood level reached just 5 cm below the maximum height of the waterproof wall, nearly overtopping the 4.6 m high barrier. All these systems were constructed at the right time to their maximum height, while the peak levels of the river persisted, and it took a considerable amount of time for the flow and levels to decrease, ensuring continuous full reliability of the IBS.
