Bourns' GDT protects power and communication lines from lightning surges.
Gas Discharge Tube (GDT) surge arresters operate as voltage-dependent switches. When a voltage exceeding the rated DC breakdown voltage is applied across the device, the gas inside the GDT begins to ionize and discharges until it reaches the impulse discharge initiation voltage. At this point, the device is fully in the "on" state, maintaining a low arc voltage regardless of the discharge current. Once the transient current passes, the GDT returns to a non-discharge state. GDT technology can handle extremely large surge currents, has very high insulation resistance in the off state, and very low capacitance, making it ideal as a standalone protector or as an initial means of protection in multi-stage circuit designs. Bourns offers a wide range of 2-electrode and 3-electrode GDTs, as well as the new innovative FLAT GDT series. The 3-electrode version, chosen for its higher reliability and safety, features a uniquely developed switch-grade fail-short function.
