This is a mechanical plug for closing off heat exchange tubes. It is a groundbreaking maintenance method that eliminates the need for welding closures in high-pressure equipment.
In the maintenance of heat exchanger tubes, the current methods for sealing leaking tubes include driving in taper pins and seal welding for high-pressure equipment. The Pop-A-Plug from Curtis Wright in the United States uses a specially machined mechanical structure plug that is sealed using a dedicated tool. It maintains pressure resistance up to approximately 40 MPa, and seal welding after plugging is not required (the maximum pressure resistance varies by size). Welding work requires time for the work itself, pre-treatment such as heat treatment, applications related to the use of open flames, and inspections during the welding process. However, Pop-A-Plug can reduce this workload and does not use heat, thus preventing damage to the equipment.
