UW JAPAN Co., Ltd. (Shinagawa, Tokyo) began selling the industry's first fiber laser welding machine, the UW-S series, which overcomes the weakness of fiber lasers regarding reflected light, in Japan starting April 2016. Previously, challenges arose from the need to "tilt" the machine or to set strict detection levels for reflected light to mitigate its impact on the oscillator. The new feature, "reflected light suppression technology," allows for stable laser output even when reflected light is returned to the oscillator, achieving stable processing that is unaffected by reflected light, in response to the high demand for processing materials with high reflectivity, such as copper and aluminum. The output options include single mode at 700W and multi-mode ranging from 1,000W to 4,000W across five models. The UW-S series has achieved low prices through mass production effects alongside the YAG UJ series. There are many manufacturers of fiber laser oscillators, but among those who claim to be strong against reflected light, few have the basis to actually process while receiving reflected light. Users who introduce the fiber laser, which has become a black box oscillator, into their mass production lines cannot dispel their concerns about maintenance support. The UW Group believes it is important to provide rapid domestic service in this regard and is focusing on strengthening customer service. This has enabled direct laser irradiation from above. Simply put, while the conventional method involves using an angled approach to the workpiece, the new model allows for vertical irradiation. While only the positive aspects are mentioned, there are also challenges. Issues such as imaging near the output optical system that could damage the fiber are anticipated. To address these, a peripheral optical system structure that is less prone to reflective imaging, avoiding intermediate angles, and actively returning reflected light to the oscillator significantly prevent accidents. The fiber laser welding machine UW-S, which enables direct overhead irradiation, does not require the complex mechanisms needed for angled irradiation, thus simplifying peripheral equipment, reducing overall equipment costs, and successfully improving production speed.
