As the voltage is increased, sparks become visible between the electrodes when a certain voltage threshold is exceeded. In this instance, we increased the voltage of the upper electrode and filmed the discharge occurring to the lower electrode beyond the limit. This phenomenon is similar to lightning discharging from cumulonimbus clouds to the ground. The parallel plate electrodes are designed for insulation breakdown testing.
