Manhole cover anti-slip (slip prevention) "Slip Rate Σ (Sigma) 03"

We have received designation for the slip-resistant method and factory for sidewalk manhole covers in Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture. The slip resistance value testing method is based on "Pavement Testing Method Handbook 6-5 Measurement of Slip Resistance of Pavement Surfaces Using a Pendulum-Type Skid Resistance Tester," and the average slip resistance value (BPN) measured in wet conditions is 64. In various locations on the main arterial roads in the Nakaku and Minami wards of Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, anti-slip processing has been carried out on manhole covers using Slip Rate Sigma 01. In Sakai City, it has been noted that there is a possibility of accidents involving falls from motorcycles and bicycles at intersections where general roads enter from main roads. As a countermeasure to prevent these falls, Slip Rate Sigma 01 (aggregate TKB) has been adopted and implemented.

This is a new anti-slip method for manhole covers. A mixture of slip rate sigma 03 resin and aggregate is embedded in the recess of the manhole cover, finished to the height of the protrusion for anti-slip processing. By using colored aggregates as shown in the photo, it can also be finished as a color-designed anti-slip manhole cover to match the landscape. In hazardous areas of the roadway, if the depth of the recess in the cover falls below 3 mm, the friction coefficient drops drastically, making it dangerous; therefore, it is recommended to replace it. However, with the covers processed using this method, both the iron and resin parts decrease simultaneously, so even if it falls below 3 mm, the friction coefficient remains high, extending the replacement period and providing economic benefits. Additionally, by using melted slag (under 1 mm) generated from incineration plants as aggregate, it also contributes to recycling efforts.

In October 2007, anti-slip processing was carried out on the manhole covers near JR Izumi-Fuchu Station in Izumi City, Osaka Prefecture, using a logging lip. This was done to prevent falls for pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles, especially during the annual autumn Danjiri Festival, where participants could slip and fall on the manhole covers if it rains. The Danjiri Festival coincides with the typhoon season, often resulting in heavy rain, and since participants turn corners with momentum, slipping and falling can be very dangerous. Our company generally uses slip plates for manholes that can be replaced with temporary covers, and logging lips for those without temporary covers that need to be processed on-site.
