The fundamental difference between regular wire mesh (which has square openings) and filter wire mesh is that the horizontal lines of the filter wire mesh are closely spaced together, making it impossible to see any gaps in a flat plane. Therefore, the open area ratio of filter wire mesh cannot be accurately measured. Various filter wire meshes can estimate pore size based on their flow/pressure drop relationship, and can be compared based on their fine particle capture characteristics.
