The hardness of O-rings comes in type A durometer hardness Hs70 and Hs90, with Hs90 being specified for general high-pressure use. However, Hs70 can also be used for the same high-pressure applications with the use of backup rings. At high pressure, there can be protrusion from the gap in the shaft. This protrusion is determined by the hardness of the O-ring, the gap between components, and the pressure.
