On the morning of June 18, 2018, a magnitude 6 earthquake occurred, primarily in Osaka Prefecture. Due to this earthquake, many areas experienced water outages.
A magnitude 6 weak earthquake originating from northern Osaka Prefecture caused water outages, leaks, and muddy water in 32 cities and towns across four prefectures in the Kansai region. In cities close to the epicenter, approximately 28,600 buildings experienced water outages. The cause was often attributed to water pipes that had exceeded their legal service life by more than 10 years, which burst due to this large-scale earthquake. The aging of water pipes is not a special issue limited to the area around northern Osaka. Many of the water pipes currently in use were buried during the high economic growth period of the 1970s, and it is predicted that if earthquakes of similar magnitude occur in the future, water outages due to pipe bursts will increase. Well water piping is designed to be earthquake-resistant, and during past major earthquakes, over 95% of wells served as emergency water sources after the disaster. At our well filtration plant installation sites, both the well piping and filtration systems operated without any issues. (Note: The water supply piping had numerous cracks and damages, leading to water outages.) We encourage you to take this opportunity to consider the importance of securing emergency water sources from well drilling.
